A subjective foray into the world of material invested with the most public hatred. A journey through memory, where ubiquitous plastic configures affective experiences. A gesture of recycling through art and an alarm signal on collective waste. The plastic crisis speaks to the societal crisis.
Born in 1994 and raised in a world of constant transition, where plastic replaced the needs and desires of adults, Alina has felt in recent years that she is living with social pressure that she cannot manage, regarding how much plastic she consumes and where it ends up.
Public conversations abound with a multitude of opinions that incriminate the use of plastic and emphasize individual responsibility, but the real measures taken by the authorities regarding the “plastic problem” do not keep up with the waste.
Referring to her childhood, to objects such as her pacifier and her first toys, Alina Tofan felt the need to transform this plastic world through an artistic gesture that would sound the alarm about irresponsible consumption, starting from a personal thread—the plastic in her memories, which she always carries with her and which, unfortunately, cannot be recycled.
“’94 – future: life in Plastic” is a participatory performance that proposes a journey into the world of plastic, from Romania in the 1990s, through the present, and into a future imagined as a dystopian world.
